Why You Should Make Open Houses Part of Your Weekend Plans

When I lived in Boston, open house culture was big. On the weekends, my friends and I would grab coffee, check the listings, and see where the open houses would be. We’d wander from one to the next—sometimes in fancy neighborhoods we could barely pronounce, other times in quirky areas we didn’t even know existed.

It wasn’t just about “house hunting.” It was about curiosity, inspiration, and a little daydreaming. We’d peek into apartments and houses, taking in different styles, layouts, and design ideas. We’d imagine ourselves living there—hosting friends in that sun-filled kitchen, reading on that cozy porch, or watching the seasons change through those big bay windows.

Now that I live in Austin, I still believe open houses aren’t just for people actively buying a home. They’re for anyone who’s curious about homes, neighborhoods, and design trends. Here’s why you should make them part of your weekend routine:

1. Gawk at Your Neighbor’s House (Legally!)
We’ve all wondered what the inside of that one house down the street looks like. An open house is your chance to find out—no binoculars required.

2. Gather Inspiration for Your Next Project
From a clever backsplash to a dreamy backyard setup, open houses are full of real-life design ideas you can bring to your own home.

3. Fine-Tune Your Wishlist
If you’re thinking about buying in the next year or two, visiting open houses helps you discover what really matters to you. Maybe that “must-have” kitchen island isn’t as important as natural light, or maybe you realize you do want a soaking tub after all.

4. Dream a Little
Maybe you’re not ready to move—but imagining yourself in a bigger space, a cozier cottage, or a home in a new neighborhood is fun. Sometimes, it’s the spark you need to start planning your next chapter.

So this weekend, check the local listings, pick a neighborhood you love (or one you’ve never explored), and spend a few hours wandering through open houses. You might leave with design inspiration, a clearer vision for your future home, or even a surprise crush on a house you didn’t expect.

Austin has an open house culture all its own—laid-back, friendly, and as varied as our neighborhoods. Whether you’re a serious buyer or just a curious neighbor, it’s an open invitation to dream.
